Magic the Gathering cards can sell for up to $3 million. Can you believe it? Some of the most valuable Magic cards include early editions of the Black Lotus, as well as more recent cards like The One Ring (2023).
Although card rip sites don’t tend to have cards valued in the millions, you might find cards like Black Lotus valued at up to $11,000. You can keep these cards in your online collection, trade them immediately, or redeem the physical version. You might even want to hold onto them in case the value increases in the future.
If you’re reading this article, you probably know all about Magic the Gathering (or MTG), but we’ll give you a little refresher, just in case. Magic is a trading card game, with multiple different ways to play. For example, you can use physical trading cards, or play online. You’ll use your cards to summon creatures and cast spells, to defeat your enemies.
Before we tell you all about the most valuable Magic cards, we’re going to introduce you to the concept of card rips. Essentially, it works like opening a mystery box. You’ll get to rip open a virtual pack of cards, to see what you’ve got. Depending on the site, the packs could include some of the most valuable sports cards, Pokemon cards, or Magic cards, as well as more common items. Here’s a quick look at how card rips work.
The first step is to sign up for your account at a Magic card rip site. You can choose from one of our recommended sites, as we’ve ensured that they’re safe and secure. Head to the site, sign up for your account using your email address and personal details (or an existing account like Google or Facebook).
Some Magic card rip sites require you to purchase the site’s virtual currency (generally called Gold Coins or GC), which you can then use to purchase the packs of cards. Packs may have different “prices” in GC, or in real cash. You’ll be able to see the percentage chance of getting each card in the pack. For example, you might only have a 0.4% chance of getting a Black Lotus card worth $11,000.
Opening your pack is as easy as clicking on the option on the site. When you go through this process, the cards in your pack will be revealed immediately. You can then decide if you want to bank the cards in your virtual inventory, or if you want to trade them. More about that later.
So now you know how to sign up and start buying packs of cards, but what should you look out for? The most important thing to remember is that you won’t be able to preview the exact cards in the pack, but you’ll often see a number of options of cards that could be inside. You might also see a percentage chance of getting each card, and in general, the higher the value of the card, the less likely you are to get it.
We’ve seen some Magic cards that are sold for millions of dollars, and while it’s unlikely that you’ll choose to spend so much money on a card, there’s a chance that you could get these rare items in a mystery box. On the other hand, keep in mind that things could go the total opposite way, and you could end up paying for a very common item with a lower value.
The most valuable Pokemon cards have sold for eye-watering amounts of money, for example one Pikachu Illustrator card sold for over $16 million USD in early 2026. But Magic cards can also be particularly expensive.
Even the pinnacle of Magic cards can’t touch the price of sports cards – for example, the most valuable basketball cards can sell for upwards of $12 million. But nevertheless, let’s take a look at some of the most expensive Magic cards and their prices:
| Card | Release Year | Price Sold |
|---|---|---|
| Black Lotus | 1993 | $3 million |
| The One Ring | 2023 | $2 million |
| Black Lotus (Artist Proof) | 1993 | $800,000 |
| Black Lotus (Artist Proof) | 1993 | $649,000 |
| Black Lotus | 1993 | $570,000 |
While rare and valuable Magic cards do pop up at cardrip sites, it’s almost entirely out of the question that you’ll get cards worth millions of dollars in your packs. We’ve put together a list of valuable Magic cards that you might actually get.
| Card | Price |
|---|---|
| Black Lotus | $11,650 |
| Starlit Angel | $7,000 |
| Shivan Dragon | $5,000 |
| Karakas | $3,000 |
| Time Walk | $2,800 |
There are a few different reasons why certain Magic cards are more expensive and valuable than others. The actual price of the cards usually depends on a combination of these factors.
There are a few different ways that you can manage your valuable Magic cards once you have ripped open the packs.
You can choose to redeem your virtual packs for physical cards. You can request a shipment of the physical cards and you’ll usually need to pay a small fee, for example $10. Once you have the cards, you can use them to play the game, or you can trade or sell them.
You can swap your cards for the site’s virtual currencies, for example GC. Use the GC to play other games on the site or open other packs or mystery boxes.
You may prefer to store your valuable Magic cards in your online account. You can then opt to trade or sell them later. This is a good idea if the card is likely to increase in value later on. While this is more common with sports cards – for example the most valuable baseball cards – Magic cards can also get more expensive over time.
So, are Magic cards worth it? Well, that depends on what you’re looking for. You shouldn’t go into the card rip experience expecting to find Magic cards worth hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. But there is always a chance that you’ll get quite valuable cards, which you may be able to trade or sell. And if you’re more into the actual Magic gameplay than the selling, you can always choose to redeem the physical versions of the cards.
We’d recommend checking out a few different card rip sites and using the information on each site to see the kinds of cards you can get. Remember, you can decide if you want to hold onto a card and trade or sell it later, or if you want to sell it immediately for the market value.

The most expensive Magic card ever sold went for $3 million USD. It was a Black Lotus card from 1993, sold in a private sale in 2024, and purchased using Bitcoin. Other Black Lotus cards (usually signed by the artist) have gone for amounts in the $600,000 to $800,000 range.
You can get Magic cards in different ways, for example by buying or trading. One of the best ways to get Magic cards is by using cardrip sites, to rip open packs, which might contain rare cards.
You can look for the colored rarity symbol on the card below the artwork, assess the condition of the card (if you have the physical version), or simply look up the value online. Card rip sites pull the market value of each card and display it on the site when you rip the packs.
