California recently passed Assembly Bill 831 (AB 831), which bans online social games with sweepstakes features starting January 1st, 2026, changing the way residents can play casino-style games online.
As a result, casino players who previously enjoyed playing online with Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins will need to explore alternative gaming options. This change is in the form of new rules regarding the legality of sweepstakes casinos in California. The facts are still murky, so we’ll break down what it means for you.
Let’s break it down:
At Gamesville, we keep a keen eye on everything in the sweepstakes world, so we couldn’t miss the latest development of AB 831. Governor Newsom signed the bill into law on October 11, 2025. The ripple effect of this law will be felt by every sweepstakes fan from January 1, 2026, the date it’s due to take effect.
And once it does, every online gambling simulation site, like your favorite sweepstakes operators, will become prohibited in California. The law aims for the very heart of how sweepstakes casinos operate by outlawing the use of dual currency systems.
Many players have grown fond of the free-to-play model and sweep coin redemptions. Yet, the lawmakers have deemed it an unregulated type of gambling. Below are the key aspects of AB 831 you should note.
Apart from these facts, here are vital dates regarding this new bill that you want to keep in mind.

I know what you might be thinking: there are bound to be some illegal online casinos operating within the state, especially when people start searching for things like “sweepstakes casinos Florida” online. And you would be right. There are offshore and illegal gambling platforms accessible within California. But you would be gravely mistaken to trust any of these sites with your money and time for fairplay.
In short, the risk, financial and legal, overshadows any benefits these murky gambling sites will promise you. You will be exposing yourself to the following risks if you gamble at any illegal casino.
Zero consumer protection – Winning in the casino is no guarantee that you will withdraw your money. And worst, you can go to the authorities in case of any wrongdoing on the part of the casinos.
Financial and data risk – You’ll encounter poor security measures at these illegal sites that leave your personal and financial data open to theft.
Unfair games – Who sets the house edge and game fairness at these suspicious casinos? Your guess is as good as mine.
Legal action – Illegal gambling is a crime that could attract legal repercussions, especially in a jurisdiction with strong laws against unregulated wagering.
Are sweepstakes casinos legal in California?
As of January 1, 2026, California made it illegal for online sweepstakes casinos to operate within the state. California residents must use free-to-play casino gaming sites such as Gamesville.com.
What are the best free slot games to play online?
One popular choice is the Rich Little Piggies series, known for its fun visuals, engaging features, and multiple bonus opportunities centered around collecting coins and chasing jackpots.
The new AB 831 law banned online sweepstakes casinos currently in use of Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins to mimic real gambling online.
Can I get in trouble for previous activities on sweepstakes sites?
The law affects operators and supporting vendors, not the past activities of sweepstakes players. But there’s associated risk if you continue playing after the law takes effect.
Can I play at social casinos that don’t offer cash prizes?
Absolutely, the ban only penalizes sweepstakes games and real prize redemptions. Pure social games with no Sweeps Coin redemption have escaped the guillotine, even in discussions around sweepstakes casino Florida regulations where users are trying to understand what still remains legal and playable.
How long do I have to complete my Sweeps Coins redemption?
Generally speaking, you have until January 1, 2026. But some casinos have set internal deadlines, so please check with your operator.
